TREMAINE

“She like what’s up what’s up with me and you?

What we fee’nin fee’nin to do?”Nobody Else But You

Many musicians out there have tried to tread that line between unfiltered-sexy and eeeiwe-absurd. Many have taken off only to crash and burn before reaching cruising altitude. Then you have the stubborn ones who try again after tanking only to burn into flames on the runway during takeoff. Thankfully, we have artists like Tremaine who have not only been soaring for ages but made a name for themselves with this style and play with this thin line year in year out.

“I’ve been lurking and waiting, that s#!t irking my patience

I’m a savage but I’m just trying some different s#!t lately

I don’t usually, have to wait in line

What you doing to me, is f***ing with my mind”

Lyrics from the song Picture Perfect. A mellow R&B track and one of my favorites from the album.

Some songs such as “The Sheets” and potentially my favorite “Animal” are more … expressive in their lyrics than others but still artsy. Unlike for example R. Kelly whose last album i tried to listen to was rather tacky and raw in its literal sense….. As in it was uncooked. I don’t even think it had any seasoning what so ever. I believe I have a tolerance for music and people’s expressive freedoms, but I couldn’t bring myself to finish the album let alone digest it.

Now thankfully, back to Trey… 1×1 had my head bopping back and forth, side to side, and up and down from the moment the beat started playing. I don’t know what it is about Trey but he has rather simple beats when you think about it but when you add his signature style and lyrics then you have genius!

My only complaint about this album is that it’s short. As a 15 track LP (including 1 prelude) it does leave you wanting more and wishing it was an 18 or even 20 track album. That said, Trey loves what he does and we normally don’t have to wait too long before he releases something new. His debut was in July 2005 and since then has released 7 albums, 1 reissued album (Trigga Reloaded), 3 EPs, 9 mix tapes, and literally dozens of features.

The last song “Break From Love” is the perfect track to close off the album. It kind of brings you down from the high you have been on as you listen to the album from beginning to end, without pressing fast-forward………… “Tremaine”
