ADDICTION

In my last spotlight I spoke about how I get attached and went on to defend how I could listen to the same song over and over as if my life depended on it. If we relate this to my love for music, in my defense it doesn’t happen often. But when it happens, it’s damn near impossible for me to turn off the repeat button. I was looking at my YouTube playlist the other day and I just smiled at myself. My YouTube knows me so well.

So here is the playlist:
Tinashe: Pretend

Typically I can tell within 5 seconds of the beat and lyrics kicking in if I will like a song or not. You may think I am exaggerating but I promise it’s the truth. All of the songs on the current playlist are no exception to this. It’s as if I fell in love with every note and lyric in each track. There’s that unique X factor that each one has that just hits me time and time again.

Trey Songz: Fumble (6 seconds)
Sevyn Streeter: Next (this one took 12 seconds including the a 9 second intro)
Empire Cast: Looking For You (3 seconds after the lyrics started)

On any given day, any one of those songs could be on repeat for a good 30 minutes before I even think of changing track. Admittedly some of them have memories attached, others are just that close to my heart. Making you feel ways you don’t intend on feeling. Consumed with powerful emotions, forced to use everything I have to not break out into song in the middle of the office or simply waking down the street.

Age doesn’t matter. Nor does genre, or message behind the lyrics. Good music is good music, and great music is moving. Addictive even. A song could have been triple platinum, or not even have made it to the top of the charts, there is no judging or prejudice. Regardless tempo or tone… the heart wants what the heart wants. So on days like today where I have been able to listen to more than 5 songs in the last hour its simply because I knew there was another dose coming on the next track to satisfy the craving. I really don’t know what I will do when the playlist comes to an end.

Everyone has their own struggles in life. Some can’t go a day without a drink, others its cigarettes… There are all kinds of hardships, things certain people just can’t take control of. Mine is music,.. my struggle… not pressing rewind. So right now I am going to ‘Pretend’ like I haven’t heard it today and do a quick search for Tinashe. I guess now I know what I will do when the playlist ends.

Tinashe- Pretend
