ADDICTION

In my last spotlight I spoke about how I get attached and went on to defend how I could listen to the same song over and over as if my life depended on it. If we relate this to my love for music, in my defense it doesn’t happen often. But when it happens, it’s Read more about ADDICTION[…]

Empire

“You still watch that show?!” she texted in disbelief. To which I responded with confidence “Yep!” silence ensued as she attempted to comprehend this new information that has fallen upon her before she continued “How??? It’s so 2014”. And to that I continued “…the music is fire”. “OK, makes sense” And that was that. A Read more about Empire[…]

Fally La Marveille

I was born in Zambia a couple of decades ago but I grew up in the most western point of Senegal. A truly lovely country that is deeply rooted in its culture. Magnificent beaches, strong religious beliefs, if you ever have the opportunity to visit this wondrous country I highly encourage you to do so. It was here that the appreciation for “African” music was cultured. When I first came back to Zambia there were few opportunities to attend concerts, and even fewer chances to find someone to hook me up with music I grew to love. I am not sure if it because of the development of more decent venues or it was just a wake-up call but Zambia has come far in this respect.

With the likes of WizKid, LiquidDeep, Boys II Men, international artist are starting to realize that there is a stage for them here. Granted we still haven’t reached the levels of Nigeria or our neighbor South Africa but I am hopeful that we too will one day host the likes of Babyface, Beyonce, & Drake. But for now, we will do with what we get.

I personally haven’t attended too many shows and I decided to forego the Boys II Men concert for my own reasons. I figured if I am going to attend a concert, I need to be sure that I will enjoy it to the fullest. While the R&B Legends are indubitable I didn’t see myself enjoying it that much. To me it was going to be one great big sing along. Great music yes, but no real entertainment value in for me. Then I saw the post for Fally Ipupa coming to the Misty for 1 night only. Before I finished reading the post I knew this was not to be missed.

The award-winning musician hails from DR Congo and started out as a backup dancer for Koffi Olimide. From the dark corners of a stage to the spotlight of MTV Africa Music Awards as he held up the award for best video (for Sexy Dance) and best Francophone Artist to name but a few.

His show was ELECTRIC! It was epic! It started on time, which if you are familiar with events here is a credit on its own. It was organized, one performer after the other and as soon as Fally took the stage the crowd blew up, yes… including me. I recall the week before I kept hoping and praying that he would perform his most recent hit “Tous Le Monde Danse”, and those were the first words out of his mouth as he took to the stage. My night was made right there and then.

Fally took to the stage at around 10pm or so and he just kept going on and on and on…. And on. Hit after hit. Song after song. He danced to the songs he performed and danced to his instrumentals right along-side with his dance crew. I haven’t seen many artists who have a number of 7min plus songs where the accredited artists knows each and every single move, Fally does. He chose a select few to come on stage and share a dance. It was truly an amazing night. He took a few short breaks here and there, and by short I mean at chosen moments he would walk to the back of the stage while the music was still playing, wipe the sweat off his face, and go right back to business. Thank you Fally.

Fally is most well-known for his Rhuma vibes but he has also released some Ndombolo, Soukous, and R&B tracks and he has shared the mic with the likes of R. Kelly, Keri Hilson, 2Face, Flavour, Salif Keita and many more. He is also a songwriter, guitarist, dancer, philanthropist, producer and executive and all this talent was evident on stage that night. Too often we have performers come through, perform a few songs, and then call it a night. I heard the crowd at the Boys II Men show were in a rioting mood because they only performed 3 songs. They had to be bullied back on stage to give the crowd what they were demanding. This was not the case at Misty that night, Fally and his team had energy for DDAAAAAAAYYYYSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Spades more than the crowd they were entertaining. So so many people left before he was done, not because they were not enjoying the show, but pair by pair, there were simply tapping out. Fally just kept going, I think they may have performed two album’s worth of music for us. And we appreciated every minute of it. Up to now, a good 2 weeks later I am still feeling greatful and entertained.

From the moment I bought the tickets I knew that I was greatly going to enjoy the show, but it exceeded all my expectations. Merci beaucoup ‘Fally the Marvel’

Overlooked But Still Stunning

It’s timeless… That’s one of the reasons I absolutely love music. Today’s hits, the really good ones, will still have you jumping out of your seat like it’s on fire in 3 years time. Similarly… songs that came out years ago but didn’t make their way to your ears will hit you today and have Read more about Overlooked But Still Stunning[…]
