Empire

“You still watch that show?!” she texted in disbelief.

To which I responded with confidence “Yep!” silence ensued as she attempted to comprehend this new information that has fallen upon her before she continued “How??? It’s so 2014”. And to that I continued “…the music is fire”.

“OK, makes sense” And that was that.

A long time ago I realized something about myself… At times, I get attached. To movies, to people, to moments, to songs… and as much as I hated it, I realized that it would be better if I made my peace with it and accepted it, learn to live with it, and learn to manage it. So that’s a piece of my truth for you. Sometimes I fight back tooth and nail, but when it comes to music it’s a whole different story. I can hear a song for the first time and instantly fall in love. 25 minutes later I’ll be singing and dancing with a huge smile on my face as if I’ve known and loved the track for years.

So here we go, the latest in my extensive list of obsessions, “You got me saying love, love, love (love, love, love), Tell me where you been all my life (tell me where you been all my life)”. That right there are the lyrics from a song called “Looking for You” by Jussie Smollet from the Empire Soundtrack. A lot of people have fallen off the Empire bandwagon but to me as long as they keep making hits like this, they have an avid follower in me. 2 minutes into episode 1 season 1 I knew they were on to something with this show. Anyone who isn’t moved “What is Love” by Veronika Bozeman has no appreciation for good music at all. And that’t another thing I love about this show, they bring talent. I had no idea who V. Bozeman was before this show. Did you know she is an accomplished singer, actress and producer? I didn’t either. Check this one out: V. Bozeman – Go.

Now back to Empire… Season 1 had everyone talking about Cookie & Lucious…. Well, more so Cookie, but Empire was Gold. The number of songs this tv show has put out in its 4 years of running is something to be proud of, and that is before you have a look at the supporting cast & guest appearances. The likes of Alicia Keys, Timberland, Snoop. Not every song they put out is great, but when they get it right boy do they get it right. Like “You’re So Beautiful” … the family version,…. such a good feel-good song. So can they hurry up and release the next episode already.
