Overlooked But Still Stunning

It’s timeless…
That’s one of the reasons I absolutely love music. Today’s hits, the really good ones, will still have you jumping out of your seat like it’s on fire in 3 years time. Similarly… songs that came out years ago but didn’t make their way to your ears will hit you today and have you like “WOAHH”. Good music is good music. Period.

That’s what brings me here today. A few days ago I came across a song that just had me. Want More by Rotimi. Some, or probably most of you, will know him better by the alias Dre … no not Dr. Dre. Hold up…

How about now? Recognize the face? Recognize the show? So yes, just like you I had him pegged as an actor, but as timeless as music is, it is also boundless. This contemporary R&B artist is a Nigerian-American actor, singer and model who has released a few tapes dating back as early as 2011, a five track project called Summer Bangerz, and most recently he released his debut album entitled Jeep Music.

So why are we spotlighting him if his musical achievements are not his biggest, and moreover few and far between? I already answered that question…. Music is timeless. I admit that what has me inspired today is a track entitled Living Foul from his 2017 EP. But as I write this now I am listening to one of his 2011 mixtapes and my head is still rocking as I listen to his passionate songs.

After a few songs, a few days of playing Want More on repeat, rewinding Only You a number of times I can’t help but liken his style to the undeniable Trey Songz in his early days. Both sing…., how can I put this? … passionate songs … you will see what I mean when you give him a listen. I don’t know how come he hasn’t blown up yet, maybe he has been focusing on TV more, bad promotion team, who knows. But it definitely isn’t because he doesn’t make good music. I’ve listened to 8 tracks back to back and haven’t felt the urge to forward a single one.

Ok so you know the song by Miguel Sure Thing, brilliant song. Almost perfect in my opinion. And I was glad that the remix I heard, although not as good as the original, did not butcher the original as a lot of remixes do. Here is this unknown MC who takes the beat and does it justice. Proper track entitled Best Thing.

If you love R&B, real good R&B, passionate and smooth R&B, Rotimi is for you. I’m sure that before the weekend ends I will have his ‘discography’. After all I’m already half way there.
