Beyond the Scars

So here is one of the many things I love about music. It does not discriminate. My niece is just shy of one year and six months but when a good beat comes on trust she will boogie as vigorously as her her little body will allow. Age, background, tribe, race, nationality, music sees none of these but instead speaks to minds and souls behind the curtains. Similarly music doesn’t care where it comes from and anyone is capable of making a really great song. Find a good team, find a great beat, and let your passion flow.

So yesterday morning I received a message from a friend, a young aspiring singer, who I have not heard from in a while. She told me her single was out and that I should download it. So me being me and always wanting to support my friends in their pursuit for happiness immediately did so. “Never seen yourself as pretty, you don’t know who you are”. This is the opening line of a song that I have since put on repeat. It is such a soulful song in so many ways. She speaks of a persons’ inner struggle and self doubt in what to me has developed to be a truly superficial world despite the fact that beauty, real beauty, is truly all around us.

“Look through the x-rays of your insecurities” she encourages us.

Emily Hakoola is a young lady I met some time ago when I was DJ’ing for a wedding. She performed that evening and I could tell that this young lady had a gift, and more importantly talent beyond her years. She has a soft and yet powerful voice which over the years as I have been watching her various video posts and listening to her covers she has come to own. Truth be told when I first started listening to the song there was an element of doubt in my mind that it was actually her. I knew the girl could sing but I wasn’t expecting it to be that good. I was surprisingly and pleasantly taken aback. This song is so good that as I was setting up our PA System this is the song I was using for the sound test. Not the latest song from Wizkid and Drake or any of the other club bangers…. I chose to look behind the scars.

Emily HakoolaThe melody, her voice, the lyrics, the meaning, it really does feel like every one of these were made for the other. The melody for her voice, her voice for the lyrics, the lyrics for the melody, and the depth of the song is just undeniable. I really am so proud of my friend, and no I am not padding this review due to a sense of loyalty. I really do love this song. Truth be told I’m sure that in the last 24 hours I have listened to this song over 20 times. In fact I am listening to it now as I write this Spotlight. My only concern with this song is in the message. Our individual struggle to find beauty in ones self can sometimes be overwhelming to the point that some chose to give up and sadly let go. I only hope that the young soul behind the voice is not facing this particular battle. But if she is I choose to believe and take comfort that she will conquer as she speaks “Don’t let anybody blame you for being you, look at yourself through heavens eyes, ’cause that’s where your beauty lies”.
