On the promo page for our Spotlight, we mentioned that music, the art, is timeless. This spotlight epitomizes that notion. In 2011 the world was graced with Loliwe, the title track of Zahara’s album, and on the 1st of May 2012 she won 7 awards, including Best Female Artist and Album of the Year at the annual South African Music Awards.
I could be wrong, but the song, let alone the album did not rock Zambia back in the same manner until late last year. All of a sudden, live performance all over the city had a few of Zahara’s tracks on their playlists, and undoubtedly, Loliwe was the main feature and most often, the best performed song.
But since then, I must say, Zambian music has not touched me. Can’t remember the last time I went out of my way to get a hold of a Zambian track.
Zahara, the South African Afro pop singer/poet is truly gifted. She primarily sings in her native tongue of Xhosa, but this does little to inhibit the depth of songs. Having listened to her album start to finish on numerous occasions, this is the perfect example of how you do not need to understand a language to love the music.
